Kids’ Clay Classes

NEW! Three Days of Clay: Multi-Age Wheel

Instructors: MSS Staff
Tuesday-Thursdays, 3-4:30PM
Tuition: $100
Location: MSS Clay Studio

Enjoy some creative time in the studio in a 3-day wheel workshop! This class will focus on the fundamentals of making pottery on the wheel, from creating the form to putting some finishing touches on pieces. Students will be able to paint and decorate their work with colored slips, and a staff member will glaze and fire pieces. Anyone who already knows the basics of the wheel may continue at their own pace. This is a great class to take with family members or friends. Clay & materials provided/All levels/Ages 8 and up. 

Adults are welcome to join this class, but must register for the session to participate and use clay.

Get your hands in some clay while creating custom pottery pieces or sculpture using textures, tools, stamps, and colored slips. Instructors will guide students through making a specific project, but students are welcome to get creative with their own ideas while learning some key hand building techniques. This is a great class to take with family members or friends. Clay & materials providedAll levels/Ages 5 and up.

NEW! Saturday Samplers: Multi-Age Wheel

Instructors: MSS Staff
Saturdays, 10-11:30AM
Tuition: $25
Location: MSS Clay Studio

Have you ever wanted to try a wheel-throwing pottery class? This 1-day class is a great introduction to this magical medium. Experience using a wheel while getting your hands in some clay. Learn about centering, shaping, and the process of making a pot on a wheel. This is a good class for children to take with their parents or grandparents, or adults who want to try out the wheel before committing to a longer class. Pieces made in this class will not be fired. This class is focused on practicing the process, so students will not take home a finished product. Introductory/Beginner level but more experience is welcome. Ages 8-Adult

Adults are welcome to join this class, but must register for the session to participate and use clay. Adults who will attend only to supervise do not have to register

Monday Multi-Age Wheel

Instructors: Abigail Wentz & Kristi Tolgyesi
Mondays, 3:30-5PM
Location: MSS Clay Studio

Do you like cups, bowls or making things to use? Then join us for mud play and wheel throwing skills. We will learn how to throw a pot on the wheel and decorate them with colored slips, carving or adding handles. In this class the studio assistants will take care of the glazing process. Just come and enjoy playing with clay and by the end of the session you’ll have pieces to keep for a lifetime. Ages 8 to adult

Adults are welcome to join this class, but must register for the session to participate and use clay.

Monday Multi-Age Hand Building

Each class will introduce a project that teaches students various techniques used in pottery making, as well as one that triggers the imagination. Students can choose to make the project or work on their own idea. Guidance and skills will be given to bring their work to a successful finish. Fun is always in the mix! Ages 5 to adult

NEW! After School Art – Nature Journaling 

Instructor: Carrie Ade
Tuesdays 3:30-5PM
Tuition: $90
Location: Marbleworks 

This class will be all about exploring the intersection of art and nature as students learn inspiring and meaningful approaches to recording their observations and experiences in the natural world.
Weather permitting, class time will be spent mostly outdoors in the studio garden and walkable areas of waterfront park as students create illustrative journal pages informed by the local environment. Students will learn about natural history of the area, be introduced to principles of scientific illustration, as well as learn effective design and layout concepts for their pages. There will be plenty of room for creativity as students choose their subjects, incorporate text as either information, poetry, or prose, and utilize a wide variety of artist mediums.
All levels/Ages 7-11

NEW! After School Art – Paint What You Love!

Instructor: Carrie Ade
Tuesdays 3:30-5PM
Tuition: $85
Location: Marbleworks 

In this three week after school class, children will have the freedom to explore, experiment, and test the limits while they paint what they love! Students will go more in depth each week as they develop skills, and most importantly begin to discover the artistic magic that can unfold when they start to hone in on what is important to them and the stories they can tell with their work.
In addition to learning the fundamental elements of creating a finished artwork and developing fluency and comfort with the painters mediums and tools, the class will focus on encouraging creativity and painting subjects that each student feels connected to. Each week students will be guided through their projects as they build confidence with their approach and experience the challenges and joy of self expression through a visual medium!
All levels/Ages 7-11 All materials included

Winter Session 4: March 11 – 25  RUNNING

All of our classes are suitable for beginners and more experienced artists. There are two comfortable studio spaces at the main building and an offsite painting studio. We encourage all students to go at their own pace in a relaxed environment. It is best to wear clothes that you can get dirty for Kids Classes!

Gift Certificates: Gift certificates are available to purchase. To use a gift certificate, please get in touch. We can tailor your gift to suit you.  

Open Studio is for currently enrolled art, clay students, and monthly independent study. Independent Study students are invited to sign up on a monthly basis. Register with the school for a monthly fee of $100.00/month.

Credit cards are accepted when registering at middleburystudioschool.corsizio.com. Payments can also be made by cash or check. Checks should be made out to the Middlebury Studio School and mailed or delivered to the Middlebury Studio School, 2377 Rte. 7, Middlebury, VT 05753. Please pay promptly to guarantee your space.

Refund Policy: No refunds given for student cancellations less than 7 days from start of class.
